On Thursday, Garth Brooks and his wife Trisha Yearwood performed at Jimmy Carter’s funeral in Washington D.C. However social media users criticised the couple for choosing John lennon’s 1971 track ‘Imagine’ as the song.
Although, this was a reprise from their tribute to Carter’s wife Rosalynn at her funeral, the couple drew immense backlash from netizens who took offense at the performance of a song whose lyrics reject religion at a memorial service in a Christian church.
The specific lyrics state, ‘Imagine there’s no heaven / It’s easy if you try / No Hell below us / Above us.’
While some users found the choice ‘weird’ and inappropriate at a Christian’s funeral others considered the performance beautiful.
The song was reportedly one of Carter’s favourites which is why Yearwood and Brooks chose to perform it.
Jimmy Carter, who served as the 39th president of the U.S.A., passed away at the age of 100 last month in Georgia. Carter’s funeral was attended by his family members as well politicians including the five living presidents of America.
