Luigi Mangione, accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan, has received nearly $300,000 in donations from supporters for his legal defense.
A GiveSendGo campaign, organized by the December 4 Legal Committee, confirmed that Mangione’s legal team accepted the $297,000 raised. His attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, acknowledged the financial support, though she declined to comment further.Mangione, a 26-year-old Ivy League graduate from a prominent Maryland real estate family, is accused of fatally shooting Thompson outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel on December 4. He was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on December 9, reportedly carrying a ghost gun, fake IDs, and a manifesto critical of the health insurance industry.
Facing both federal and state murder charges, Mangione could receive the death penalty. Prosecutors have also charged him with terrorism-related offenses. He has pleaded not guilty and is currently held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
The case has sparked widespread debate, with some Americans expressing anger toward the health insurance industry and sympathy for Mangione. The December 4 Committee claims the media is unfairly portraying him, calling the terrorism charges “fundamentally unacceptable.”
UnitedHealthcare has not commented on the case. Meanwhile, Mangione’s supporters vow to continue raising funds for his legal battle.
