Pro-EU leader Nicușor Dan defeats nationalist George Simion to win Romanian presidency

Centrist Nicusor Dan has been declared the winner of Romania’s closely watched presidential election with 99 percent of votes counted.

According to Al Jazeera, Bucharest’s pro-European mayor won 54 percent of the votes, the electoral authority reported on Monday, to beat nationalist George Simion, who was on 46 percent.

The result of the race, viewed as crucial for the direction of the NATO member and having wider geopolitical implications for Europe, has been warmly welcomed by the European Union and Ukraine.

Who is Nicușor Dan?

Nicușor Dan is the reserved mathematician-turned-reformer who is currently serving as the mayor of Bucharest.

He secured 54 per cent of the vote in the runoff election held on May 18, 2025, surpassing nationalist challenger George Simion, who received 46 per cent.

This outcome came despite Simion’s commanding performance in the first round of voting on May 4 , where he led with nearly twice the votes Dan received.
