The House is preparing to take up President Donald Trump’s domestic agenda this morning, after the House Rules Committee voted overnight to advance the measure — just hours after the Senate narrowly passed it in a 51-50 vote on Tuesday.
Here’s what we know:
- Inclement weather: As of last night, House Republican and Democratic leaders were furiously working to get their members to Washington ahead of the pivotal floor vote on Trump’s agenda, with margins so tight that a single absence could potentially determine its fate. Storms across the East Coast canceled or delayed flights for at least a handful of members, with some lawmakers posting on X to say they had flights back to DC canceled and were scrambling to find a way to get back for the vote.
- Floor vote plans: House Speaker Mike Johnson said yesterday that a floor vote on Trump’s sweeping tax and spending cuts bill could come today or “Thursday at the latest.”
- Administration’s message: Trump’s budget chief Russ Vought told CNN that the White House wants the House of Representatives to pass the Senate version of Trump’s bill and send it to his desk to sign into law. “We need to pass this bill. We need to get it to the president’s desk,” Vought said when pressed by CNN’s Kaitlan Collins at the White House on whether the administration wants the House to pass the legislation as-is.
- Warning from GOP leadership: House Majority Leader Steve Scalise warned that members should not try to change the president’s bill as leaders aim for final passage, saying it could be “what collapses the entire thing.”
