Geomagnetic Storms Rock Earth’s Atmosphere.
On August 12, 2024, a series of geomagnetic storms of varying intensities were observed and predicted to continue throughout the day. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center and SpaceWeatherLive reported multiple instances of geomagnetic activity, including G1, G2, and G3 level storms. These events were triggered by coronal mass ejections (CMEs) impacting Earth’s magnetic field. The geomagnetic activity was significant enough to warrant extended warnings, with the K-index reaching levels of 5 to 7, indicating moderate to strong geomagnetic storms. The Space Weather App and BGS Space Weather also issued warnings and updates on the ongoing and expected geomagnetic conditions.
