The Houston Health Department shut down Midtown’s Gazebo Seafood House for allegedly reopening illegally.

A new seafood restaurant in Midtown has been ordered to stay closed after failing an inspection on Monday morning, according to the Houston Health Department.

The restaurant did not pass a change of ownership inspection and cannot reopen until it meets the necessary standards, the department stated.

Last week, the health department shut the restaurant down for operating without a permit. Inspectors noted critical health violations, including raw oysters being stored in a dirty mop sink with stagnant water, which could pose a risk of foodborne illness.

Despite the closure, a viewer reported to media that the restaurant was still open and serving food over the weekend.

Although inspectors did not witness the restaurant operating, the health department informed media that reopening before passing inspection could result in fines of up to $2,000 per violation, per day.
