“Willis High School students disciplined for striking opponents with belts following football game victory”

“Controversy surrounds how a high school football team celebrated their recent win, leaving some raising concerns.
After a dominant 77-0 victory over the Cleveland Indians last Friday, several Willis Wildkats players were caught on video lightly smacking the backsides of Cleveland players with belts, a gesture tied to a viral TikTok challenge. While some view the act as harmless, others argue it crossed a line.
‘They think it’s just a little joke, but it’s not. I think it’s pretty dumb,’ said Travis Allen.
Roshonda added, ‘I’m pretty sure they didn’t mean any harm, but it could still be a problem.’
However, others don’t see the issue.
‘I played soccer and basketball my whole life, so to me, it’s just good sportsmanship. Come back next time and play harder,’ said Bobby Soto.
Richard Burke commented, ‘Just kids being kids. We did it too.’
Despite differing opinions, Willis ISD has taken action. The students involved will be suspended from the first half of Friday’s game and are required to perform community service. The district is also in communication with the University Interscholastic League (UIL).
In a statement, Willis ISD expressed disappointment:
‘We are deeply disappointed by the unsportsmanlike conduct displayed by some of our football players after last week’s game against Cleveland. This behavior does not align with our district’s values, and we are committed to preventing future incidents. We have been in contact with the UIL and have submitted our proposed disciplinary actions. The athletes involved have already faced consequences, including suspension for the first half of tomorrow’s game, community service, and additional disciplinary measures during practice. We do not condone this behavior and sincerely apologize to the Cleveland ISD athletes, coaches, parents, and community.'”
