Carvajal’s knee injury casts shadow as Real secure 2-0 victory over Villarreal

Real Madrid’s right-back may face a lengthy spell on the sidelines, with the injury potentially being season-ending

Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal sustained what appeared to be a serious knee injury during their LaLiga victory against Villarreal, head coach Carlo Ancelotti confirmed on Saturday.

The Spanish champions secured a 2-0 win, ending a two-match winless streak after their 1-0 loss to Lille in the Champions League on Wednesday and a 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid in the previous league fixture.

However, the victory was marred by Carvajal’s injury in stoppage time, which left him writhing in pain. The stadium fell silent as the right-back had to be stretchered off the pitch. Ancelotti described the injury as “pretty serious,” adding, “The dressing room is sad and worried. It’s something that happens frequently due to the congested schedule, and unfortunately, it’s affected a very important player for us.”

The 32-year-old Spanish international was injured following a clash with Villarreal midfielder Yeremy Pino, which caused his right knee to bend awkwardly as he stretched.

“He’s a crucial player for us because of his experience and professionalism,” Ancelotti said. “I’ve spoken to him and he’s understandably upset, but there’s not much we can do except wait for the medical evaluation and focus on his recovery. The doctor has advised that further tests are required, but it’s definitely a knee injury.”

Carvajal, a six-time Champions League winner and key figure for Real, was immediately sent for medical examinations, with some Spanish media speculating that the injury could potentially end his season.

Ancelotti refrained from discussing replacements, saying, “We have Lucas Vazquez, but it’s not the right moment to talk about this. We’ll wait for the results and, if the injury is serious, we’ll manage the squad accordingly.”

Carvajal’s injury further complicates matters for Real Madrid’s defence, as goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was already unavailable for the Villarreal match after sustaining an abductor injury in his left leg during the draw against Atletico Madrid last weekend.
