A former Missouri City police officer indicted for manslaughter in a crash that killed a mother and her son was arrested Wednesday, according to the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office.
Blademir Viveros, 27, faces two counts of manslaughter and one count of aggravated assault. His bond is set at $250,000 for the manslaughter charges and $300,000 for the aggravated assault, totaling $800,000.
Authorities report that Viveros was responding to a robbery call when he struck the victims on Cartwright Road on June 20. According to the original report, Mason Stewart, 16, was killed on his birthday when the police car hit him and his mother, Angela Stewart, a 53-year-old Houston ISD counselor.
Police say a suspect in the robbery stole $200 before fleeing in a silver Honda Civic. Viveros, headed east on Cartwright Road, collided with the Stewarts’ vehicle as they exited a Dollar Tree parking lot. Both Angela and Mason Stewart died at the scene. Officials stated that Viveros was speeding and did not have his emergency lights on.
The Stewart family expressed their heartbreak and gratitude for the community’s support, emphasizing that while the indictment is a step toward accountability, it does not ease their grief. They hope their tragedy serves as a reminder of the importance of justice and the value of life.
The DA’s office reports that Viveros’ court date has not yet been scheduled.
