The Harris County Sports & Convention Corporation (HCSCC) has approved a study to conduct a cost analysis and explore future possibilities for the Astrodome.
This decision comes just a week after the Astrodome Conservancy revealed its proposal to revive the iconic structure, often called the “Eighth Wonder of the World.”
“We need to perform due diligence to ensure we have the data and scientific analysis needed to decide the Astrodome’s future, considering the broader vision and master plan for overall development,” said HCSCC Chairman and Bishop James Dixon.
The study will also examine the future of NRG Park and its facilities as a whole. According to Dixon, this effort represents a new level of detail and scope.
“There have been other studies in the past, but none as comprehensive as this. At the encouragement of county officials, we’re ensuring every aspect is thoroughly addressed,” he said.
The study will focus on two main options: the cost of restoring the Astrodome to basic operational functionality and the cost of demolition. Restoration would include repairs to plumbing and HVAC systems but would not cover historic preservation or upgrades to meet modern venue standards.
Houston-based Kirksey Architecture will lead the study, set to begin in the coming weeks. The firm has worked on notable projects such as Houston’s First Baptist Church near Downtown and various buildings for Rice University, Texas A&M, and San Jacinto College.
The HCSCC expects to release the study’s findings in the coming months.
