Inside an abandoned building on North Main Street, dusty rows of metal racks still advertise a long-past clearance sale.
“It’s been abandoned as long as I can remember,” said Gael Gutiérrez, who lives nearby. “I’ve never seen it open or in use; it’s been like this for a long time.”
But this building isn’t just vacant. An investigation by media reporters revealed that it’s one of over 170 buildings across Houston classified as dangerous by the City of Houston. The investigation took them to various sites deemed hazardous by city inspectors, uncovering neglected apartment complexes, a burned-out restaurant, and even an old school still owned by the Houston Independent School District.
