Friday morning saw a challenging start for drivers on two major freeways.
In one incident, an 18-wheeler struck the Houston Avenue overpass bridge on I-10 Katy Freeway eastbound at Taylor, a recurring issue in Houston. Harris County Sheriff Gonzalez reported the crash around 7:40 a.m., and by 9:30 a.m., several right lanes were blocked, remaining closed for hours due to hazardous materials cleanup.
To address these frequent bridge strikes, TxDOT has plans to reconstruct the area, allowing the main lanes of I-10 to travel over Houston Avenue. Construction is set to begin early next year. Fortunately, no vehicles were hit, and TxDOT confirmed that the bridge didn’t sustain significant damage. The condition of the truck driver was not immediately known.
In another incident in Brazoria County, northbound SH-288 near CR 57 was shut down when a jackknifed 18-wheeler blocked all main lanes. Traffic was diverted to the frontage road, and the crash was cleared by about 11:15 a.m.
