At least 11 injured in shooting at beach town in South Carolina, US

Video footage from the scene showed dozens of police vehicles and ambulances at the site.

At least 11 people were taken to the hospital after gunfire broke out on Sunday night in a quiet South Carolina beach community, according to Horry County Police Department in South Carolina.

The shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. local time on a residential street near the Intracoastal Waterway in Little River, a small town about 20 miles (32 kilometres) northeast of Myrtle Beach.

Horry County Police said the conditions of those injured remain unknown and confirmed that more victims may have arrived at the hospital in private vehicles.

Authorities described the case as an “active and ongoing investigation” and advised the public to avoid the area while emergency services respond.

Roughly 90 minutes after the incident, police stated that the shooting was believed to be isolated and that there was no further threat to the community.

Separately, a North Myrtle Beach police officer responding to the shooting accidentally shot himself in the leg at a marina about 3 miles (5 kilometres) from the original scene. He is in the hospital in stable condition, said Lauren Jessie, a spokeswoman for the North Myrtle Beach Police Department.
